Flatpack Film Festival

An collection of unseen photographs by the American filmmaker and photographer Janet Mendelsohn were discovered during the CCCS 50 celebrations, capturing the neighbourhoods of Balsall Heath and Highgate in Birmingham at a time of enormous change. In advance of a major exhibition of Mendelsohn’s work at Ikon Gallery, Flatpack presented a temporary show in Balsall Heath, aimed not only at displaying the images but also mapping where they were taken, many of the places depicted having since been destroyed.

The exhibition was put together on a tiny budget, with Flatpack producing all of the signs and labels themselves, so a fairly distinctive font was needed. I chose Workhorse from Letterhead Fonts, based on lettering by sign painter Greg Reid and reminiscent of the shop lettering seen in many of Mendelsohn’s photos.

In addition to the flyer, I also produced a limited run of risograph posters.
