Flyer/Poster, A2 folding to 140 x 198mm
The original 9 Evenings: Theatre and Engineering was a 1966 series of events at the 69th Regiment Armory in New York, with artists such as Yvonne Rainer, John Cage and Robert Rauschenberg invited to collaborate with engineers from Bell Laboratories. As part of the Radical Networks season, Vivid Projects invited contemporary artists to collaborate, critique, re-work and react to the programme, as well as showing documentation of three original events. One of these, Yvonne Rainer’s Carriage Discreteness, divided the performance space into a grid, and instructed performers to carry items from one square to another. This idea was referenced in the poster/flyer, which unfolded to reveal nine individual sections, with elements within the design moving between these. In keeping with Radical Networks’ emphasis on changing technology, the artwork also includes various references to imaging formats, from Adobe Photoshop’s checkerboard background, to the Atkinson dithering filter. The typeface is Grilli Type’s Cinetype, based on lettering created by a subtitling machine.
